Ningura Napurrula
DOB: c1938
BORN: Kiwirrkurra
LANGUAGE GROUP: Pintupi
COMMUNITY: Kiwirrkurra, Tjukula – Western Australia

Ningura Napurrula was born around 1938 at Watulka, which is south of Kiwirrkurra. Ningura moved to Papunya in the early days of settlement and was married to Yala Yala Gibbs Tjungurrayi (now deceased) an outstanding artist who painted for Papunya Tula Artists.
In 1996 she was part of a group of elderly women from Kintore and Kiwirrkurra who began painting for Papunya Tula Artists in their own right. Ningura participated in an initial Papunya Tula Artists exhibition in 1996 and in the impressive Kintore Women’s Painting for the Papunya Tula retrospective at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
Her depictions include the story for Wirrulnga, a Rockhole east of Kiwirrkurra. In 2003 her painting was used as a motif on an Australian stamp.
Ningura Napurrula is one of the eight artists whose work is now part of the largest international commission of contemporary Indigenous art from Australia at a major new museum in Paris, the Musée du quai Branly. Ningura Napurrula artwork in black and white is superimposed eternally on the ceiling of the Paris museum’s building for the future generations to see.
In 2007, Napurrula was named as one of Australia’s 50 most collectable artists by the prestigious Australian Art Collector magazine.
